Vineyards over 100 years old with tiny yields that produce wines of character and superior quality. That, coupled with unequalled local knowledge of the much sought after Priorat terroir and first class winemakers is the secret of Cims de Porrera and the reason they are able to bring out the best of their local varietals, Cariñena and Garnacha.
Priorat is without doubt one of Spain ́s most premium regions with world wide recognition for producing world class wines and Cims de Porrera are at the summit of quality here.
The winery was founded in 1996 by artist Lluis Llach and one of Spain ́s most influential winemaking families, the Perez Ovejero family. The idea from the beginning was to improve the quality of the wines made in the local cooperative and to offer a good price to the farmers for the quality of grapes they were producing. Following the immediate initial success, the prestigious Perelada wine group invested in the project and Jose Luis Perez passed on the role of winemaker and general manager to his son, Adria.
The philosophy of Cims de Porrera remains the same, quality and innovation making the most out of their old vine Cariñena and Garnacha, offering a price for the grapes that corresponds to the quality and that offers the farmers a good quality of life to ensure continuity of these amazing vineyards. All the wines come from vineyards controlled and managed by Adria Perez although they are still owned by the farmers who remain partners in the project, an essential part of the quality focused concept. The result is a range of unique, exclusive and concentrated terroir driven wines.
Within the DOQ Priorat, this winery has been a pioneer in valuing the hard work of the grape growers. They wanted to show their support by paying a proper price for the grapes which has in turn, allowed the farmers to preserve their incredible old vines and to continue producing such unique, exclusive and concentrated grapes.
All the vines are from the local varietals Cariñena and Garnacha and are all old vines (over 70 years old) with extremely low yields (an average of 300g per vine). These amazing vineyards are planted in slate soils on the characteristic Priorat slopes. 15 producers cultivate 54 hectares of vineyards. All of these factors explain why Cims de Porrera are wines of such concentration and marked personality.
