About La Zorra
Augustin and his family are born and bred in the rural mountains of Salamanca., one of the most beautiful and unspoiled regions of Castilla y Leon. Having served the region and its many visitors, the family has made wine for generations.
Alarmed by the uprooting of many wonderful old vine Rufete vineyards, they not only decided to produce their own wine to create a benchmark for others to follow, they created the D.O Salamanca together with local farmers.
Today, La Zorra is the benchmark wine for the region and this relatively new project is only just beginning to show what the region can offer to today´s consumers. Focusing on local varietals such as Rufete and Rufete Blanco, they offer something very different in the crowded world of wine.
The environment in which the vines lie is varied. Small parcels of vines on steep slopes hidden amongst the wild countryside. They select grapes from 9 different vineyards around the region. 3 types of soil are clearly identified; sandy soils which give elegance, expression, aromas, alcohol, and fineness. The clay soils offer structure, robust wines with lots of colors. Lastly, our unique slate which offers minerality, complexity and a unique character.
This limited production winery is located in one of Spain most beautiful villages, Mogarraz just south of Salamanca. La Zorra, meaning fox in Spanish is named after the wild animal often found roaming the vineyards in search of only ripe grapes. Augustin and his family have grouped together a series of amazing farmers who proudly form an an integral part of La Zorra as they continue to nurture their specific spots of the best Rufete, Tempranillo, Garnacha (locally known as Calabres), Rufete Blanco locally known as Verdejo and Palomino.
