The D.O. Pago Vera de Estenas is the spirit of Francisco Martínez Bermell. Since he settled in the region of Utiel-Requena in 1945, he brought the exporting tradition of Grao de Valencia. Becoming independent from the family business, Francisco Martínez Bermell became one of the most prestigious winemakers in Spain. He was elected honorary president of the Spanish Association of Oenologists, after being president for two terms (8 years) and vice-president of the International Wine Organization (OIV).

In 1981 all his winemaking activity moved to the Casa de Don Ángel winery, a modernist building built in 1919, near Utiel. This winery showed again its pioneering spirit and began an intense change that it considered necessary in the viticulture of the region, little by little it left the exports of wine in bulk and focused on improving the grape varieties and recovering the bobal with new types of elaboration, all this destined to the quality bottled wines. Thus Vera de Estenas became the first Valencian winery to cultivate and elaborate varieties such as Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon.

And this has been the challenge that his sons have continued, especially Felix Martinez Roda, who year after year produces wines with their own stamp, being faithful to the concept of innovation, but without losing the expression of the terroir where the vineyard is grown. Precisely this search for its own personality, which tries to combine tradition and modernity, is the legacy and spirit of Vera de Estenas wines.

When the Bobal grape variety was reviled, it was widely believed that quality red wines could not be made with Bobal. In our constant search for wines with their own personality, genuine, different and of great quality, we were visionaries when we found the singularity with our autochthonous variety Bobal. It has been 22 years since 1998 when the first Casa don Ángel - Bobal was produced and we are proud to have started a trend that today almost all the wineries in Utiel-Requena continue.
